Review ~ Heart of the Rose: A Tale of the Black Rose Guard by K.L. Bone

Heart of the Rose (Black Rose #2)Heart of the Rose: A Tale of the Black Rose Guard

by K.L. Bone
In this sequel to Black Rose, reunite with the captains of the Immortal Guard and witness Mara and Edward at the beginning of their epic love story, which spans more than a millennium of heartache, pain, and undying devotion. When Edward is sent on a mysterious quest by the ruthless queen, nineteen-year-old Mara—the youngest sub-captain to ever serve the Royal Guard—vowed to await his return, never anticipating decades would pass without word of his fate. The noble captain is taken prisoner by a rival court where he is forced to endure years of brutal torment at the hands of his captors. His life clings to but a single thought—Mara. Refusing to accept that her love will never return, Mara clutches to a hope which defies the bounds of reason. However as years pass, memories fade from comfort to unbearable grief. As Mara prepares to accept the unimaginable loss, a sinister creature of roses and shadow haunts her dreams. Dreams of blood. Dreams of torment. Dreams of Edward. The dark presence lingers, and Mara finds herself trapped in a certainty she fears no other will believe—even those closest to her heart. She must choose between honoring her vows to the immortal courts to which she has sworn her life, or leaving to search for the man who possesses her soul. Dive into the beginning of the tale that shapes the most feared, most loved, and most revered captain in the history of the immortal courts.

I was lucky to win a copy of this book ... I loved the first one so much

However, I wasn't as in love with this book as I was the first but it was completely enjoyable non the less!
In "Heart of the Rose" we are taken back to the beginning of Mara and Edwards love story ... this is not a flowery poetic romance novel ... just like the first it's a darker tale, heartbreaking.
Edward protects Mara by taking the Queen's mission that will surely have him fail or die ... When he goes missing Mara waits ... and waits ... and waits ... other's fear he is dead but Mara knows he lives and is being tortured.
At first she just waits for him to return but she has dreams of him that are so vivid and real ... in wakeful hours and in sleep she dreams/sees him ... Her hopefulness turns to sadness and grief and it changes here deep in her soul.
Eventually the Queen and the guards force her to accept Edwards death but she can't completely believe it.
He in imprisoned but refuses to say who he is, who he protects, where he is from ... he too, dreams of Mara ... vivid realistic visions that torment him
Since they are of the immortal courts, Mara and Edwards separation is long ...
My heart ached for Mara ... for Edward ... for Arron ... for Sarah (I do hope for more about her)
I was angry for her and wanted to see her escape and search for him ... but that would be boring and while it was hard to read her pain and heartache ... I was drawn to read more and hope for her
There are a few parts of the story that bothered me but I'll trust that the author did what had to be done
and Queen Clarrisa scares me ... but I do love to hate her!
